Do you have any particular favorite foods that you like to cook while camping? I know some people stick to the basic roasting hot dogs over the open fire while others go all out gourmet in their cooking and make multiple course meals!

Below is a favorite of mine. It’s super easy and delicious.

Hobo Dinner

4 medium potatoes, sliced 1/2 medium onion, sliced or diced 1 lb ground beef or cut up sausage 2 tablespoons of butter/margarine 1 carrot, sliced 1/4 cup water salt and pepper to taste aluminum foil

Add water to ground beef and mix well. Add potatoes, butter, onion, veggies and seasoning. Mix well. Separate into 3-4 servings. Wrap in double-thickness aluminum foil.

Place seam side up in the hot coals of the fire, rotating periodically.

Open carefully!

    Omlette in a Bag

My dad was a Beaver leader and this recipe worked wonders with the kids, and hey, it’s fun for adults too.

    You’ll need
    • Plastic Freezer Bags (One per person)
    • Omlette Ingredients (green peppers, mushrooms, cheese, salsa, red peppers, tomatoes, etc)
    • Eggs (2 per bag)
    • Salt, pepper
    • large pot, can be put on the fire or on a camp stove, filled with water

    1. Each person gets their own ziplock bag, if you have a big crowd, you may want to bring along a sharpie to mark the bags.
    2. Each person sprinkles their ingredients of choice into their ziplock bag. This can be done before the trip, just make sure to seal the bags airtight.
    3. Crack 1-2 eggs into each bag, close the bag airtight once again, and shake them!
    4. Pop the bags into a rolling boiled pot of water for 13 minutes
    5. Lift the bags out of the hot water. Omlettes should just roll right out of the bags ready to eat!

mmmm..omelets are so good! I like that each person gets to personalize their own meal too. Perfect for the picky eater in the group. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve yet to make this recipe but I’m sure it will turn out to be amazingly delicious.

    Curious George Crepes

    • 4 8-9” flour tortillas
    • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
    • 1 cup bananas, sliced
    • 2 tablespoons melted butter
    • 2 teaspoons sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    1. Before you leave on your trip, mix the sugar and cinnamon together and seal into a zip-lock bag. Keep it air-tight to save on space.

    2. When at the campsite, stack the tortillas together and place in a piece of aluminum foil, Wrap them up and place on indirect heat to warm them. Turn them every so often for about 6 minutes.

    3. Take out the tortillas and have everyone sprinkle on their desired amount of chocolate chips and banana slices. Roll up each tortilla like a burrito, then brush on the melted butter (can be melted over the steam from a camp stove, or indirectly from a campfire if placed in a small crock type pot).

    4. Grill crepes for about 3 minutes each. The chocolate chips should be melted by this time.

    5. Brush on the remaining butter and dust with sugar cinnamon mixture.

    Voila! Decadence even while camping!

Here’s a good one that I’ve made before that can be done both over the open fire on a grill or in a frying pan over the camp stove.

    Pita Pizzas

    Ingredients:

Pita bread (about 2 per person) – Pitas are great to take camping because they can’t get squished in your pack! Pizza sauce (tomato paste works fine as well). This can be dehydrated ahead of time if your looking to save weight. Mushrooms Mozzarella Cheese Onion Pepperoni slices Green Pepper Any other topping you like (although overloading them can turn out dangerous!)

Cooking instructions: -Cover pita with sauce. -Apply desired toppings to top sice of pita, add copious amounts of cheese. -Slowly place that side down onto the grill/frying pan and cook slowly until cheese melts
